This lighthouse is located on the east channel of Grand Island, Michigan. Its purpose was to provide assistance to shipping traffic as it made it way past the island and into Munising Harbor.
The lighthouse opened for service in 1868. However, it was removed from service circa 1908-1913 due to severe lack of maintenance. Over time, erosion began to take its toll on the edifice and the lighthouse was in danger of being washed away. Efforts were undertaken to restore the lighthouse to a "rustic form". A 300-foot seawall was added in 2000 to protect the lighthouse from beach erosion. The lighthouse is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, the only way to view the lighthouse is to see it from the east channel as it is privately owned and is closed to the public.
